DAE have a motherboard go bad right after a power flicker, or is my luck just bad?
Had a client's desktop die on me Tuesday after a quick brownout, and I found the VRM caps bulging when I pulled the board. Swapped in a $60 used board from eBay and it posted first try, but now I'm wondering if I should just start quoting surge protectors on every build. Anyone else seen a brownout cook a board like that, or was this just a weird one?
Brownouts are actually worse than full outages for this. When the voltage sags the PSU tries to pull more current to keep the rails up, and that extra load hits the VRM hard. A full blackout just shuts things down clean, but a brownout makes everything fight to stay alive. So no, not weird luck, that's just how it goes.
