Hit 1,000 drive replacements last month and nobody talks about this part
I keep count of every hard drive and SSD I swap out for clients, and last month I crossed 1,000 exactly... it surprised me how many drives fail after 3 years no matter the brand. Everyone says to back up religiously, but I've seen a ton of drives die just sitting in a drawer for six months. Has anyone else noticed drives failing from non-use more than heavy use?

Are those drawer drives actually dead or just not spinning up right away?

You know what that reminds me of? A buddy of mine years ago inherited his dad's old filing cabinet from the 1970s. Heavy metal thing, felt like it weighed as much as a small car. He'd heard stories about a secret drawer in the bottom, but it was stuck shut. Took him a weekend and a can of WD-40 to finally get it open. Turned out the mechanism wasn't broken, just gummed up with old glue and dust from decades of sitting in a damp garage. Once he worked it free, that drawer slid open smooth as butter. So with these drawer drives, it might be something as simple as a connector that's loose or some corrosion on the pins. Sometimes they just need a little elbow grease and patience to come back to life.
