I see this at least twice a month at my shop in Boise. People bring in a laptop that shuts down randomly and they already bought a new battery or charger, but the real issue is a $3 tube of paste that hardens after 8 years. The owner told me she only used it on the couch, so it never felt hot to her, but the CPU was cooking at 95C. If you pull a heatsink and it flakes off like chalk, that is your sign. How do you explain this to a customer who thinks you are just ups elling them on a cleaning?
