PSA: clonezilla drive imaging vs my old dd script, clonezilla saved my Saturday
Had a client in Mesa with a dying 6 year old drive, tried my usual dd script first and it choked on bad sectors halfway through, took 4 hours for nothing. Switched to clonezilla with the ignore bad sectors flag and had their whole drive copied to a new SSD in 40 minutes flat. Anyone else keep falling back on old command line habits even when a real tool does the job better?
Man, this is just how people are with tools in general. My dad still uses a hand saw for everything even though his chop saw would finish the job in a tenth of the time. Same thing with guys who still change oil with a wrench and a pan when a drain valve takes two minutes. We learn a way that works once and then we treat it like gospel forever. The tricky part is that old habits do work, right up until they don't, and that's usually the worst possible moment to find out. Guess the lesson is to reach for the right tool first, not just the one your hands already know.
