My kid asked to help with the trowel work this weekend.

He's only ten but he was so careful with the edges. Seeing him take pride in it made all the sweat worth it.

Remember my dad showing me how to mix mortar by hand. He made me feel the texture with my fingers to get the water ratio right, said the tools were an extension of your arm. The sun was brutal that afternoon and my shoulders ached for days, but laying those first few bricks straight gave me a quiet kind of satisfaction I still chase sometimes. Funny how those small, dusty lessons stick with you.

Man, I used to roll my eyes at stuff like that. Now I get why that kind of work actually means something.

What changed your mind about that kind of work? Was it a specific moment, or just getting older? @the_hugo hit it right about that quiet satisfaction. It's not something you can really explain to someone who hasn't felt it. The proof is in the work itself, in the straight line or the solid feel of something done right. Makes you wonder what else we're quick to write off before we actually try it.
