My backup drive failed without warning last night

Lost 3 years of family photos because my external Seagate just clicked and died. I tried freezing it for 2 hours like some forum said, no luck. Anyone else had a drive fail out of nowhere and actually recovered data without paying a fortune?

Gotta push back on the freezing thing - that's an old myth that usually kills the drive more. The clicking sound is the read/write head crashing into the platter, and ice just makes the metal contract and messes things up worse. You might still have a shot if you stop trying DIY tricks and send it to a real recovery place, but yeah that costs money. Have you checked if your drive is still under warranty or if your homeowners insurance covers data recovery? Sometimes they'll cover it if you file it as property damage.

Crashing? Might be over for that drive honestly.
