After seeing a slow motion video of a metal rod vibrating in a vacuum on a physics forum last month, I realized the flag movement in the Apollo footage matches that exactly, so can anyone explain why the 'no wind' argument is still so popular?

Have you ever noticed how people bring up the flag ripple but never talk about the footprints? Like, the dust around the footprints should've been kicked up in a big cloud if there was any air, but it just stayed put. That's the same physics as the flag rod slowing down in a vacuum, the whole thing is about a lack of drag. I think the "no wind" argument sticks because it's easy to picture a flag on Earth and it's a short soundbite, but the real proof is in how the dirt behaves. Once you see that, the whole debate just kinda fizzles out.
