Ditched the manual takeoffs after one too many screw-ups
Used to do all my material estimates by hand on printed plans, but after I miscalculated 2,000 square feet of drywall on a job in Portland last spring, I switched to a digital takeoff app. Has anyone else had a close call like that with manual counts?

Are you kidding me? I still do everything by hand because it forces me to actually check my work twice. Digital tools just make it easier to click through without thinking.

Oh man, that 2,000 square foot miss hurts just hearing about it. I had a similar thing happen with hardwood flooring once and it's the worst feeling when you realize you're way short on site. Since I switched over to doing everything on my phone or tablet, it's just way easier to catch my own mistakes before they become a problem.

Totally feel you on that. It's such a sinking feeling when you realize you messed up the math, but catching it on a screen definitely beats finding out the hard way on site.
