Just realized buying a cheap laser level was a huge mistake

I spent $40 on a no-name laser level off Amazon for a basement remodel in Denver. The calibration was off by almost a quarter inch after a few drops, and I had to redo all my furring strips. Ended up borrowing a friend's Bosch GLL55 for the rest of the job. Anyone else had luck with budget laser levels or should I just bite the bullet on a nicer one?

Was the calibration off out of the box or only after those drops?

Did it start messing up right away or did it take a few days to notice? I've seen some units come with shaky calibration from the factory, especially if they sat in a warehouse for months. The drops probably just made an already weak spot a whole lot worse.
