That $1,200 laser level I bought sat in the case for 6 months before I finally realized my string lines were off by a quarter inch every time.
A guy on a commercial job in Raleigh let me borrow his rotary laser for one afternoon and I measured back with my tape and everything was dead on, so I went home and tossed the string in the trash the next day.

String lines are cheap and lasers are expensive. That quarter inch you're mad about might be from a knot in the string or a hot day stretching it out. I've seen guys set up a $2,000 laser and still have to check it with a level cause the tripod settled on soft ground. A laser is a tool, not a magic fix. It's a helper, not a replacement for knowing how to read your tape and bubble.

@sammartinez makes a solid point about how even fancy gear still needs the basics. Your tape and level don't care if it's a laser or string, they just show you the truth. Its good to remember that the cheapest tool in your kit is still your own eyes and experience.

You still checked it with a level anyway, right? I mean, @felixlane already said it, your bubble and tape don't care what fancy gadget you're using. Seems like a lot of extra steps to still end up double checking the old way.
