That fancy laser layout tool I bought last month is already acting up

Picked up a green beam rotary laser from Home Depot in Denver about 3 weeks ago. Worked great for the first two days on a basement reno. Now the auto leveling is glitching out every time I try to set a reference line. Called their support line and sat on hold for 45 minutes before they told me to send it back for a $35 calibration fee. That's nearly half what I paid for the thing. Anyone else had this issue with self leveling lasers crapping out after a few uses?

@rodriguez.mia is right about temp changes but honestly you get what you pay for with those cheap lasers, the expensive ones never have this issue.

Heard a contractor on a podcast say those green beam lasers are finicky with temp changes, might explain why your basement is messing with the auto level. That $35 fee is highway robbery though, basically admits they know the plastic gears wear out fast. Can't imagine spending that much extra just for the privilege of getting a fix that should be free under warranty.

Honestly, I had the same thing happen with a red beam laser once. A buddy told me to just pop the batteries out for a minute and wipe the sensors with a lint-free cloth, cleared the glitch right up for me.
