Warning: I put GPS trackers on 12 concrete trucks for 60 days and the idle times shocked me
So 2 months back I strapped cheap GPS units on a dozen mixer trucks running out of a yard near Dayton. I was sure the delays came from traffic or the plant, but the data showed something else. Trucks sat idling an average of 47 minutes per pour, mostly waiting on pump crews to set up. My boss thinks tracking this stuff just makes drivers feel spied on, and a few guys told me flat out they'd quit if we made it permanent. But we cut idle time by 22 percent on the 4 trucks we kept monitoring and saved real money on fuel. So is fleet tracking worth the hit to morale, or should we fix the crew scheduling first? Curious what you all would do.
