A talk with my regular at the salon chair made me see my work differently

I was doing a simple root touch-up for Mrs. Ellis, who's been coming to me for years. She was quiet, then said, 'You know, this hour in your chair is the only time I feel completely looked after all month.' I mean, I always try to be nice, but hearing that hit different. It wasn't about the color, it was about the care. Has anyone else had a moment like that, where you realized you're giving someone more than just a haircut?

Wow, that's a heavy thing for her to say out loud. It really shows how much people are just STARVING for a quiet moment where someone actually listens. Like @grant.olivia said, we're selling peace. It's wild to think a root touch-up is someone's main monthly check-in. You're not just covering gray, you're holding space for them. That's a huge deal.

Ever think about how we're basically paid to listen? I had a client tell me his haircut was the only time someone touched him kindly all week (which, wow). It's crazy what people trust us with just because we hold scissors.

Sometimes we forget the quiet service we provide is a real lifeline for people. Mrs. Ellis basically told you she buys a moment of peace, and you're the one who sells it. It's a funny weight to carry, knowing your skill with clippers or color is someone's main form of self-care. We end up being part therapist, part friend, and all for the price of a haircut. Makes you wonder who's really getting the better deal in that chair.

Exactly. We're basically cheap therapy.
