The old perm solution pH thing I never knew until last month

I was reading an old 1980s textbook my mentor left me and it said perms used to run at a pH of 9.5 plus, way hotter than the 8.5 we use now. No wonder those clients from back then had straw for hair. Anyone else ever dig through old salon manuals and get surprised by the numbers?
