For years I trusted my gut on rigging angles, then a math sheet in Odessa changed that
I used to eyeball everything, slings, shackles, all of it. Back in Odessa, Texas about 4 years ago, we were lifting a 12,000 pound heat exchanger and I figured my 60 degree angle was close enough. The load shifted maybe 6 inches off the pad and my foreman, Dale, just looked at me and said, 'that's how you lose a finger, not the load.' So I started actually doing the math on every pick, even the small ones. Now I pull out my tape and a cheap protractor I keep in the cab, and I work out the load on each leg before anything leaves the ground. It adds maybe 5 minutes per lift, but I've had zero close calls since. Anyone else make the switch from feel to formula, or am I just the slow one here?

You ever just assume a 45 degree angle was close enough because it looked right? I did that for way too long. Then I had a 4,000 pound valve swing on me last spring because I was off by maybe 10 degrees, and it bent a handrail like it was wet cardboard. That was the moment I started doing the numbers every single time. Now I measure the sling length, the spreader bar, all of it, and I write the load per leg on the side of the shackle with a grease pen. It feels slow at first, but after a week it just becomes part of the routine. And nobody’s had to yell at me about a shift since.
