I thought the 'crane operator's lucky hat' thing was a joke until a job in Cincinnati went sideways

You're totally right about it being a comfort thing. I worked a summer near a dock and the forklift guys were the same, they had these beat-up old caps they wouldn't work without. One guy's hat blew off into the water and he shut the whole thing down until they fished it out with a net.

Oh it's no joke at all. I've seen guys get super weird about their gear, especially the hat. It's like a comfort thing, a ritual. You don't mess with it because when you're up that high, any little bit of confidence helps. That Cincinnati story probably has a wild ending.
