Noticed a lot of guys skipping daily crane inspections

I was out on a job in Houston last Tuesday and saw this operator just hop in and start lifting. No walk around, no check of the wire rope, nothing. I told him that a cracked sheave almost took my finger off back in 2019 because I skipped a morning look over. He shrugged it off like it was no big deal. Has anyone else run into guys who think the pre-shift walk is optional?

Yeah I skipped mine once and a bird had nested in the boom. Not my finest moment.

Oh man, I used to be one of those guys who'd skip the walk around and just go. I figured if the crane ran fine yesterday, it'd be fine today, you know? But then my buddy had a hoist line let go right in front of him because of a chunk of metal caught in the drum, and I saw how fast that wire unraveled. That moment totally flipped my thinking. Now I do the full circle every single morning, even if it feels like a waste of time. It's just not worth rolling the dice over five minutes of your day.

Same deal with checking your truck tires before a long haul.
