Back in 2019, I'd only write characters who felt like me, but a prompt from a workshop in Cleveland forced me to try someone completely opposite.
Now I always start with a character flaw I personally find annoying, which makes them way more real (and honestly, more fun to write). Anyone else have a trick that flips a character from flat to interesting for you?

Seems like a lot of drama over a poem, honestly.

Yeah, giving them a secret they're terrified of anyone finding out. That always adds a layer for me.

Oh man, that's so true. A buddy of mine in college, @cameron_hernandez69, had a secret side gig writing really cheesy romance poems for a greeting card company. He was mortified his football team buddies would find out. The guy lived in constant fear someone would recognize his flowery words in a drugstore.
