Finally finished a short story after 3 years of starting and stopping

I've been sitting on this idea since 2021, and last week in my apartment in Portland I actually typed the last sentence. It's only 2,800 words about a guy who finds a locked safe in his basement, nothing fancy. Tbh I thought I'd never get past page 5. Has anyone else taken forever to finish something simple?

I had this thing with a short story about a woman finding her grandmother's old letters... took me like four years to finish it and it was barely 2,000 words. Every time I sat down to write I'd end up researching something dumb like what kind of stamps they used in 1952 or how to describe a rotary phone properly. By the time I actually got the ending typed I'd rewritten the opening paragraph like twelve times and the whole thing felt like it was fighting me the whole way. Congratulations on getting it done though, that last sentence feeling is the best.

Yeah I think that's just how it goes sometimes. The stuff that seems small ends up being harder to finish than the big things. Like people who can write a whole novel outline in a day but take two years to clean out their garage.

I mean I see what you're saying @beth_park but idk, for me the big stuff is way harder. I can bang out a 500 word post in ten minutes no problem, but a whole novel outline? That would take me months and a lot of crying.
