I finally stopped using the big credit repair companies after a mess in Phoenix
Last summer I paid a big name credit repair firm $150 a month for 6 months to fix my credit for a housing loan. They promised to remove old collections and late payments from my report. After all that time and nearly a grand spent, nothing changed. I went to a local credit union in Phoenix and a loan officer straight up told me those companies can't do anything I couldn't do myself for free. She showed me how to write dispute letters and call the bureaus directly. It took me maybe 3 hours of work over a week to get two old accounts removed on my own. Has anyone else had better luck doing it themselves instead of paying those monthly fees?

Honestly, that line about 'doing it yourself for free' hits hard. How much money do you think you wasted on those monthly fees before you figured out the DIY route? I'm curious if the credit union also warned you about any potential downsides like disputes getting flagged.

Haha dude how much did I waste? Probably like 400 bucks over two years before I woke up. My credit union definitely warned me about disputes being slower to resolve if you DIY, but honestly I've only had one issue and it worked out fine.
