I used to think a credit check for a rental was just a formality
Honestly, I was at the leasing office in Charlotte last year, ready to sign for an apartment. The agent ran my report and said my score was 580, which meant I needed a co-signer or a huge deposit. I had no idea a few old medical bills were still there. I spent the next three months disputing those items and got two of them removed, which bumped my score over 620. Has anyone else had a specific bill pop up and ruin a housing application like that?

Welcome to the club where an old parking ticket can cost you a security deposit.

My last landlord held back $150 for a "cleaning fee" because of a single coffee stain on the counter. It felt like they were just looking for any excuse to keep the money.
