Stopped paying a credit repair company after 6 months, wish I'd done it sooner
After 6 months of paying $150 a month to a credit repair firm in Phoenix, I caught them just disputing the same 3 accounts over and over while nothing changed on my score. Then I started calling the bureaus myself on a Tuesday and used the direct dispute portal for free, got an old charge-off removed in 4 weeks. Has anyone else had better luck doing it solo vs paying a service?

My TransUnion score jumped 47 points after I used their online dispute form for a medical bill that was 5 years old. The credit repair company I paid before that kept sending the same generic letters to Equifax and calling it progress. I also learned you can request a reinvestigation through the mail with a return receipt, which got me real results on an old collection. The whole thing took me maybe 3 hours spread over a couple weekends, versus the $900 I burned on that company. If you're halfway decent at filling out online forms and keeping copies of stuff, you're probably wasting your money too.
