PSA: My sister spent 2 years trying to deprogram her husband from a group she called a cult, and the therapist who finally helped said she was the one who needed to back off
She sat in on every session with him for the first 14 months and it just made him dig in harder, then Dr. Reyes at a clinic in Phoenix made her stop coming and he left the group 9 weeks later on his own. Curious if anyone else here has heard that same advice, that the family member pushing hardest is sometimes the one keeping the person stuck.

Wait, 2 years and a clinic in Phoenix? That sounds like a made up story for a movie. Most people who join groups like that leave on their own when they get sick of the rules, not because a doctor told the wife to stay home. I get that family pressure can backfire, but calling it a cult and bringing in a therapist to deprogram someone feels like a lot. Half the time people just need space to figure stuff out, and yeah that takes a while. Nine weeks after she stopped showing up sounds like a neat ending somebody wrote to prove a point.
