That Netflix doc about the wellness retreat leader shocked me
I thought it was just another yoga scam, but the part where she convinced people to cut off contact with their families for 6 months straight was wild. What changed your mind on something you were skeptical about in the cult world?

Hold up, maybe the families were the toxic ones though. My cousin joined a group like this and honestly her parents were controlling AHs who guilt tripped her every time she tried to grow. The 6 month no contact rule gave her space to actually think without their drama poisoning everything. Some people really do need to cut off bad family to heal, and the leader just provided a structure for that. Not every group that asks for space is a cult sometimes it's just hard boundaries. The financial stuff is the bigger red flag to me, but the family thing could be legit for the right person.

Practical advice from someone who's been around this stuff longer than I'd like to admit. Always look at what happens to people who question things or want to leave. If the leader gets defensive or cuts them off publicly, that's a huge red flag. The family isolation part is textbook stuff - they make you think your loved ones are toxic so the group becomes your only support system. Watch for any group that pushes you to make big life changes quickly, especially financial ones. That's usually when the real damage starts.
