The way people call any group with a uniform a 'cult' drives me nuts lol

My cousin's book club has matching t-shirts and meets every Thursday, and someone on Facebook called it a cult. Like seriously, a cult has a leader who controls your money and life, not a book schedule and themed snacks. Has anyone else noticed people just throw the word around for anything these days?

Friend of mine joined what she called a "running group." Turns out it was a bunch of people who wore matching gear, paid monthly dues to the "leader" for motivational speeches, and had to recruit new members to move up in rank. She lost $200 before she realized it wasn't about exercise at all. Now any time I see a group with a uniform, I ask what their monthly fee is before I judge. But your cousin's book club sounds harmless, matching shirts don't scare me unless they ask for my banking info. The word really has lost all meaning when you compare snacks and a novel to actual mind control.

Wait, does my D&D group count as a cult if we all chip in for pizza?

Yeah people just call anything a cult these days, it's like they forgot what the word actually means.
