Am I the only one who thinks the old Orange Julius in the dying mall off Route 9 is better than a fancy smoothie place?
I was walking through the mostly empty Tri-County Mall in Cincinnati last weekend and spotted an Orange Julius that has clearly been there since the 80s. The sign was cracked, the orange logo was faded, and the guy behind the counter said he has been working there for 22 years. I got a small original for $4.50 and it honestly tasted better than the $9 smoothie I bought at a new place downtown two weeks ago. Everyone says these old mall food spots are sad and should just close, but I think losing them is a real loss for anyone who grew up going to malls. Does anyone else have a weird attachment to a specific old food stand in a mall that is barely hanging on?
My uncle used to drive 45 minutes just for the chili dogs at a place in his old mall, and he swore the drive was part of the whole thing. There is something about a spot you have been going to for years that makes the trip worth it even if the mall is empty. @fiona_hunt71 maybe your buddy is not really chasing the corn dog, he is chasing the memory of how that place used to feel. I would probably do the same thing if my old spot was still open.
