That $18 phone mount failed on the freeway, my GPS took a dive

Last Tuesday I was heading to a job in Dayton and my $18 magnetic phone mount let go right as I merged onto I-75. My phone bounced off the dash and slid under the passenger seat, and I had to pull over at a rest stop to fish it out. The adhesive pad lost grip because it got hot in the sun, I guess, but I'd only had it for 3 weeks. I ended up buying a vent clip mount for $12 at a gas station and it's held fine so far, but now I'm wondering if the cheap ones are all a gamble. Has anyone else had a mount fail at the worst possible moment, or found a brand that actually sticks around?
