Last week I was scrolling through a local news post about how crime in Austin spiked 40% this year and I almost panicked. Then I dug into the actual city data link they buried at the bottom and it turned out the 'crime' number included parking citations and expired meter fines. Like, they lumped a $25 ticket for leaving your car too long at a meter with actual assaults and burglaries. I called the city clerk's office and spent 20 minutes on hold just to confirm it, and yeah, the public dashboard lets you filter by category but the media report didn't bother. It made me wonder how many other viral crime stats are just messy data being pushed for clicks. Has anyone else found a big local stat that fell apart once you checked the source breakdown?

Did you check if the media report used the raw total or the "violent crime" category on that dashboard? Because I found the same thing with our city's numbers, but the twist was the spike only showed up when they included code enforcement stuff like overgrown lawn fines, and those get filed under "public safety" in the state database. The real kicker is that the city clerk told me the media outlet actually asked for the filtered data, but the public records request came back with a PDF that had a different date range than the dashboard, so they just ran with the scary headline. Makes me wonder if some of these viral stats are less about lazy reporting and more about the city making itself look bad on purpose so they can ask for more police funding.
