Rant: my brother in law said 73% of people get their news from social media, so I looked it up
We were at a cookout in Toledo last weekend and he kept quoting some poll about how almost everyone gets news from Facebook and Twitter now. I pulled up the actual study and the number was closer to 53%, and that was people who get news there sometimes, not mainly. Why do stats like this always get stretched when they get passed around, and does anyone know a good place to check the real source before quoting something?
Man this happens with everything that gets passed around. My aunt posts those "studies say" things on Facebook all the time and half the time the study was like 40 people in a lab or it's from some site that doesn't even exist anymore. Same deal with that classic "you swallow 8 spiders a year" thing, totally made up but people still say it. And money stats? "Millions of Americans have no savings" turns into "everyone is broke" by the time it hits the group chat. The game of telephone just adds sauce every time someone repeats it. If you want the real deal, go find the actual study or poll and read the methods part, that's where the truth lives.
