Saw a viral post claiming you can charge a phone 50% in 5 minutes in a microwave, so I tried it with an old Samsung
I know, I know, but the post had 40k shares and a video that looked real. I used a junk Galaxy S5 I had in a drawer, put it on a plate with a glass of water (the post said the water "soaks up the waves"), and ran it for 90 seconds. Nothing happened at first, then the screen flickered once, made a pop sound, and that was it. Phone was dead dead, not even a charge light, and the microwave smelled like burnt pennies for a day. The whole "trick" works because the metal and battery heat up fast, which is the opposite of charging. So now I have a $0 phone and a microwave I'm scared to use for soup. Anyone else ever fall for one of these and lose a kitchen appliance over it?
A dead phone and a smelly microwave is a pretty cheap lesson compared to some of the stuff people do for internet points. There are videos of folks boiling eggs in microwaves and having them explode, or dropping phones in liquid nitrogen, and none of that gets 40k shares without someone getting hurt. The water glass detail is actually the funny part, like the waves are little guys who get distracted by a pool and forget about the phone. Your microwave is probably fine, the burnt penny smell is just whatever coating cooked off the inside wall, run it with a bowl of vinegar and water for a few minutes and it'll clear out. Worst case you microwave soup in it and your soup tastes a little weird for one meal.
