That time a retired librarian fact-checked my viral post in 10 minutes

I shared an article about a famous painting being stolen from a small museum in Italy. It got thousands of shares in two hours. Then a woman named Carol commented with links to the museum's own website showing the painting was on loan, not stolen. She had spent 10 minutes looking it up. Now I double-check everything before I hit post, especially if it sounds dramatic.

That "retired librarian named Carol" story is exactly why I keep a browser tab open to Snopes all day long.

But what if the person who made up Carol is also a librarian planting misinformation to make us look bad for questioning things.

That "what if the person who made up Carol is also a librarian" angle is a real head-scratcher, but the simpler truth is most folks spreading fake news don't have the time or skill to build a fake librarian profile with real links.

okay but like, is it really that deep? i get that fake news is annoying but people acting like Carol ruined their whole day need to chill. i saw a post last week about a celebrity dying that turned out to be from 2019, i just shrugged and kept scrolling. maybe it's not about being a "serious issue" so much as people wanna feel smart for catching a mistake. and honestly, if you're getting your news from random facebook shares and not at least glancing at the source, that's kinda on you.
