Finally spotted a deepfake in under 30 seconds after months of practice

Last month I was scrolling through a random political clip on YouTube, the one where a candidate says something wild about taxes. Three years ago I would have just believed it and moved on, but I stopped and looked closer. The lighting on his face didn't match the room behind him, and his mouth movements were just a tiny bit off from the audio. I timed it, and it took me maybe 25 seconds to spot both tells. That felt like a huge win for me, since I used to fall for these things all the time. I mostly learned from watching breakdowns on this forum and a few YouTube channels that show side by side comparisons. Has anyone else had a moment where their training finally clicked in the wild like that?

The first time it really clicked for me was watching a video of a celebrity endorsement I almost shared. I noticed the shadow under her chin was pointing the wrong way compared to the light source in the background, and her earrings didn't swing at all when she turned her head. It took me maybe 40 seconds to spot both things, but I was so proud I didn't hit that share button right away. What really helped me was practicing with those time-lapse editing clips on YouTube where they show you the original footage side by side with the fake.

And honestly, same here - now my watch time on videos is like 90% me squinting at reflections instead of whatever the person is saying. I caught myself yesterday staring at a YouTuber's coffee mug to see if the logo was on the right side when she held it up, and I completely missed her whole recipe. My friends think I have a problem, which lmao they're probably right. The earring thing is gold though, I've been using that trick too and it's wild how many deepfakes mess that up. I still fall for the obvious ones though, like last week I shared a video of a cat playing piano and spent an hour defending it before someone showed me the paws were literally just floating. We're all just out here getting played by pixels.

You mentioned the earrings not swinging - that's the exact kind of detail that got me too. I was watching some cooking video last week where the chef's spatula bent weirdly when he picked up a pancake. The physics just didn't look right. So I paused it and stared at his reflection in the stainless steel fridge behind him. The reflection was blurry and the timing was off by a split second. Now I spend way too much time just staring at random shadows in videos instead of actually listening to what people are saying.
