My cousin's kid asked me why the president on TV looked 'shiny'

He's eight. We were watching a news clip. He pointed at the screen and said the person's face looked wrong, like a plastic mask. I checked the video myself. The lighting on the left cheek didn't match the neck at all. No natural skin texture. It was a deep fake, a pretty good one too. Made me realize kids might spot the weird stuff we adults just accept. Has anyone else had a kid point out a fake before you did?

That "kids might spot the weird stuff" line reminds me of an article about how their brains process faces differently.

My niece caught a fake ad last week.

Phoenix149's point about face processing is huge. It's not just about noticing bad lighting. Kids haven't built the same mental shortcuts we have for filling in gaps, so they see the raw data. That's why an eight-year-old sees a plastic mask while we see a slightly off politician.

Yeah, it's a real thing you can test. Try showing a kid a deepfake video next to the real person. They'll point out the weird mouth movements or dead eyes way faster than an adult will. We're so used to seeing people on screens that our brains just smooth it all over. Makes you wonder what else we're missing because we're on autopilot.
