I was sure digital painting needed tons of layers until a simple flat color study changed my mind.
Seeing how much mood I could get with just one layer and some opacity tweaks really opened my eyes.

I used to stack like 30 layers minimum for every piece. That simplicity breakthrough hit me last year when I was trying to speed paint. Limiting yourself forces you to solve problems with value and color mixing on the fly. Clipping masks and low opacity brushes on one layer can do way more than people think. It just makes the whole process feel less stuck and more like actual painting.

Totally get that, @margaret736. I forced myself to use fewer layers last year and it changed how I paint. Now I mix colors right on the canvas and it feels way more natural.

When @margaret736 said limiting yourself forces on-the-fly solutions, it made me consider how few layers lock you into your decisions. That pressure gives the work a certain raw energy you can't get with endless undo options. Doesn't that make the final piece feel more truthful?
