My 40,000 file desktop finally got cleaned after I saw the numbers
I kept telling myself I'd sort through my downloads folder next weekend for like 5 years straight. Finally ran a disk analyzer tool on my C drive and saw I had 40,000 files just sitting on the desktop alone, taking up 120 gigs. That number hit different, so I spent a whole Saturday deleting duplicates and old installers. Has anyone else had a shock from the actual file count pushing them to actually clean?

Yeah that line about "raw data making you realize how much junk actually piles up" really hit me. I actually read somewhere that the average person has like 50,000 files on their computer they'll never touch again, stuff like old installers and random PDFs. It made me think about all the crap I was hoarding without even knowing. My desktop was basically a digital junk drawer for years until I saw the actual number of files myself. Once you see that big number staring at you in the face it's like a wake up call you can't ignore anymore. Now I try to keep my files under 500 on the desktop, it just feels cleaner and my computer runs way smoother too.

Not everyone needs a spotless desktop to function, and I honestly think 500 files is still a ton of clutter. My own setup is a mess of shortcuts and temp files I reference daily, and my ancient laptop still boots fine. Maybe the real win is just knowing where your stuff is, not obsessing over a number.

You make a good point about those numbers really putting things in perspective. Used to think my cluttered desktop was just a normal part of using a computer, but seeing 40,000 files in black and white really shifted my view on it. That sort of raw data makes you realize how much junk actually piles up without you paying attention. Ended up spending a whole Sunday myself after checking and finding 30 gigs of old screenshots and installers just sitting there. It's funny how a simple number can give you the push you needed for years. Now I try to do a quick cleanup every few months just to keep things manageable.
