My external drive with 9 years of photos just died mid-transfer

Last Tuesday I was finally moving everything to a new NAS and the old Seagate just clicked twice and went silent. Lost about 2,000 family pictures because I never backed up the backup. Has anyone else had a drive fail right when they tried to organize it, or am I just cursed?

My 2015 Seagate died the same way, but @shane_bell is right, I was the backup plan that never showed up.

Just clicked twice and went silent" is exactly what a dying drive does, and that's on you for running a 9 year old Seagate with no copy anywhere. Drives don't fail because you finally decided to organize them, they fail because they hit their hour limit and you got lucky it lasted that long. A $60 drive and 20 minutes of copying would've saved all 2,000 pics.
