TIL a random barista in Chiang Mai changed how I work

Was grabbing coffee at this place near Nimman Road. The barista asked what I do. I said freelance writing. She goes 'You're not a digital nomad, you're a digital tourist.' Hit me hard. She said most nomads just bounce around without actually building anything where they are. Now I'm trying to actually connect with people here instead of just working from cafes.

Stick to the same places long enough that people start calling you by name.

What does "building something" actually look like for you now, is it a specific community project or just trying to go to the same coffee shop every day? I'm curious because I've met so many travelers who say the same thing but then just end up at coworking spaces with other foreigners. It's so easy to think you're connecting just because you're in a new country.

Did you try showing up to the same spot for a few months straight?
