Mediation beat lawyers for us, wish we tried it sooner

We spent 8 months and about $14,000 on two lawyers fighting over a couch and a retirement account. Finally switched to a mediator in Austin, Texas and wrapped everything in 3 sessions. She kept us focused on the kids instead of scoring points. Has anyone else had way better luck with mediation over the traditional route?
