Tried to fix a squeaky floor and drilled into a water pipe instead

I was in my hallway last Saturday trying to screw down a loose floorboard, heard a hiss, and realized I hit a 1/2 inch copper pipe. Now I've got a wet patch in my ceiling downstairs and a $200 plumber bill. Anybody else ever accidentally turn a 10 minute job into a whole weekend disaster?

I mean... is it really that bad though? A wet patch in the ceiling drywall isn't the end of the world, it'll dry out. And $200 for a plumber sounds like you got off pretty light honestly, I've heard of people paying way more to get pipes fixed behind walls.

Man, you gotta nip that stuff fast. Had a tiny wet spot in my kitchen ceiling last year. Thought it was nothing, let it dry. Three months later the whole sheetrock buckled and water was dripping through the light fixture. Ended up costing me $800 to cut out the rot, replace the insulation, and repaint. The $200 plumber would've saved me a lot of headache if I'd called them first thing.

Is it really that serious though? A little wet patch usually dries out on its own if you catch it quick enough.
