Warning about using cheap spackle on textured ceilings

I was patching some nail holes in my bedroom ceiling last month and grabbed a small tub of the budget spackle from the hardware store. My neighbor, who's been a painter for 20 years, stopped by and said, 'That stuff is going to flash like crazy under paint on a textured surface.' I didn't listen and just sanded it smooth. Sure enough, after I painted, every single patch was a shiny, smooth spot that stood out against the orange peel texture. I had to go back, scrape it all out, and use the more expensive lightweight spackle he recommended, which dries with a bit of tooth to it. It took me an extra weekend to fix my mistake. Has anyone else found a specific product that blends well with different ceiling textures?

But honestly, how often do people even look UP at your ceiling?

Totally agree, and @finley_owens that sounds about right.

My last spackle job looked like a bad skin graft.

Oh man, can we get a refund on spackle lessons? I tried to fix a hole from an old shelf and it ended up looking like a topographical map of the moon. I sanded it so much I think I made it worse. That stuff just does not want to go on smooth for me.
