Closed off a channel too early on a Lake Erie job

Old timer who ran a tug for 30 years told me to check the current flow three days before I close a cutoff. I figured it was fine, sunny week, water levels steady. Cut it off Thursday and by Saturday the channel shoaled up bad, lost a day of work and burned $400 in fuel redigging. He was right. Anyone else get advice from the older guys that you wish you'd listened to sooner?

Three days out is guessing, currents shift overnight after a rain upstream.
