Guy at the supply house changed how I think about mudding corners
I was picking up a few buckets in Phoenix last Tuesday and this older taper named Rick asked why I was still using a standard 6 inch knife on inside corners. He showed me his modified 10 inch knife with a slight curve he made himself, and honestly I struggled for two days before it clicked. Has anyone else tried reshaping a tool they've used for years and found it actually works better?

Three days and two ruined buckets of mud later, I finally get what Rick was going for. My buddy Dave thought I lost my mind when he saw me filing down a brand new 10 inch knife in the garage like some kind of mad scientist. The trick is you don't want a sharp curve, just a slight banana shape so the mud feathers out on both sides without digging in. I still grab my 6 inch for tight spots but that modified knife cuts my corner time down by at least a third now. Rick probably thinks I'm some copycat hack but hey, if it works it works.

I did the same thing with a 4 inch knife for doing inside corners on smaller bathrooms, just a little bit of curve on the edge and it changed everything.
