My doctor just linked my sinus problems to unprotected sanding

Get a decent respirator, it's cheaper than meds and missed work.

Yeah that "cheaper than meds" line hits hard. I used to just grab those cheap paper masks when sanding body filler, thought it was fine if I was just doing a quick job. Then one time I had a coughing fit so bad I saw stars, felt like I nearly hacked up a lung right there in the shop. Changed my tune real fast. Now I won't touch any kind of dust without a proper sealed respirator. It's not just about today, it's the crap building up in your lungs for years.

Did that scare make you more aware of other shop hazards too?

My uncle was a drywall guy for thirty years. He'd come home from work with his hair and eyebrows just coated in that fine white powder, like a ghost. Laughed it off, said it was just dust. Now he's on oxygen 24/7 and can't walk to his mailbox without stopping to catch his breath. Seeing that happen to him made every safety rule in the book feel real.

Friend's sinus infection turned chronic, same as @wilson.lee's cough story.
