Vent: Burned $75 on mesh tape that wouldn't stick worth a damn

Grabbed a roll of that cheap fiberglass mesh from Rural King last week because it was half the price of paper tape. Soon as I hit it with the first coat of mud, the whole thing bubbled up and peeled right off the joint. Anyone else have better luck with that stuff or is it just strictly for patches?

That mesh tape is honestly a nightmare for drywall joints. I tried it once on a ceiling repair and ended up peeling half of it off in frustration. The only time it ever worked for me was when I used it strictly for patching holes, not for long seams. For taping joints, paper tape with a thin pre-coat of mud underneath saved me so much headache. You gotta really press that paper into the wet mud and let it set before the next coat. A little trick I learned was to mist the paper tape with a spray bottle right before applying it, keeps it from bubbling up. Have you ever tried that approach or are you just done with the whole mess?

My old man swore by fiberglass mesh for everything and I thought he was just stuck in his ways. But I grabbed a roll of the cheap stuff from Rural King last week and it bubbled up within minutes on a ceiling joint. That spray bottle trick you mentioned, I tried it on a patch this morning and it actually laid flat for once. Never would have guessed a little water would make that much difference. Do you go heavy on the mist or just a light spritz before you press it in?

Actually read somewhere that the trick is to mist the back of the mesh, not the front, so it sticks better to the mud. Tried it on a ceiling repair yesterday and it held way better than the usual dry application. I go with a light spritz, just enough to dampen it without it dripping. You ever notice how the cheap stuff seems to have a different glue coating than the name brand?
