The way some guys set up a 5/8 inch sheave on a 1990s Dover traction machine is just wrong

I keep seeing them mount it with the flat side facing the wrong way, which throws off the rope line. It matters because it causes uneven wear on the grooves after about six months. I learned this the hard way on a job in Cincinnati where we had to re-rope the whole thing. Anyone else run into this specific setup problem?

Seen that exact thing cause a rope jump on an old Dover. The flat side of the sheave has to face the machine side, not the hoistway. If it's backwards, the rope sits at an angle and eats one side of the groove.

But hold on, what if the manual was wrong from the start? I've run into a few old units where putting it the other way actually lined everything up better. The rope sat fine and we didn't see any weird wear. Maybe the original install had it backwards and the "right" way just copies the mistake. Could be that some of these jumps happen from a bent frame or worn bearings, not just the sheave direction.

Honestly, I bet the old manuals had a blurry diagram that started this whole mess. Ever check if the replacement sheaves are even marked clearly?
