I argued that open floor plans were overrated at a design meetup in Portland last Tuesday
Everyone was raving about knocking down walls for that airy loft feel, but I pushed back saying it makes noise control and fire spread a nightmare in smaller homes. A guy got defensive and said I was stuck in the past, then three others nodded at my point about smoke traveling faster without barriers. Has anyone else dealt with pushback for questioning a trend everyone else seems to love?

It's like how everyone suddenly decided open shelving in kitchens was genius until they realized dust collects on everything. People get weirdly attached to trends like they're personal beliefs instead of just design choices.

Hannah nails it with that open shelving bit. People treat trends like sacred cows instead of just stuff you live with. I've been in houses where the open floor plan looks great in photos but you can hear someone chewing chips from three rooms away. If you're dealing with this, try suggesting a compromise like half walls or sliding barn doors. They give you that open feel when you want it but let you close things off for noise control and fire safety. It's less about being stuck in the past and more about making a space actually work for how you live, not how a magazine cover looks.
