Compared two different job estimating apps side by side last week and the winner wasn't even close

I been using one app for over a year on my flooring jobs. Sent estimates through it, tracked payments, the whole deal. Then a buddy in Tulsa told me to try this other one. First app takes like 5 minutes per room to punch in measurements and materials. Second one? 90 seconds flat once you set up your price templates. First one also charged me per estimate sent after 10 free ones. Second one is just a flat $20 a month. I'm switching this week. Anyone else find a simple estimator that just works without all the extra bells and whistles?

I was a brisket purest for years until a guy in Kansas City showed me the wrap trick

Used to think wrapping brisket was for people who couldn't manage a fire. Went to a comp in Kansas City in 2021 and this old pitmaster let me try his wrapped packer that had been sitting in butcher paper for 2 hours. The bark was softer than mine but the moisture was insane. He told me he wraps at 165 every single time and hasn't had a dry flat in 8 years. Tried it on my next cook at home and honestly it saved a brisket that was stalling hard at 170. Still not gonna wrap every time, but for tough cuts I'm converted. Anyone else come around on wrapping after swearing it off?

Had a dredge line clog up on me near Baton Rouge last Tuesday and it changed my whole approach to pump pressure

I was running a 12-inch cutterhead in some heavy clay down by the Mississippi and the suction line just stopped dead. Took me about 45 minutes to clear it out with a backflush and a rod. My foreman walked over and said, "You're running that pump at 90 percent when the line can't take it." So I dropped the RPMs down to 75 percent and the material started flowing smooth again. Turns out I was forcing it too hard and just packing the pipe full instead of letting the slurry move steady. Has anyone else found that backing off the throttle actually gives you better production in sticky stuff?

3 years ago I spent $400 on a used DSLR and a tripod to get a blurry blob of the Andromeda galaxy, but last week my phone mounted to a $50 tracker pulled out way more detail than that old setup ever could, what little piece of gear made the biggest jump for you?

Customer told me my brush was too stiff and it changed how I clean flues

Had an older homeowner pull me aside last month after I swept his chimney. He said my poly brush was scratching his clay flue liner and making it worse over time. I didn't believe him at first, but he showed me the tiny grooves in the liner he pointed out from a previous sweep. After that, I switched to a softer nylon brush for standard clay flues and only use poly on metal liners now. It only cost me about $30 for the new brush, but it already saved me a callback on a job last week when the liner looked way cleaner without the scratching. Has anyone else dealt with this issue with poly brushes on old clay?

But then I found out from a facial recognition blog that the lighting and a 50mm lens can change cheek shadows by 15% or more. So is it really a new procedure or just bad paparazzi setup? Kinda curious if anyone else has seen that same debate over lens distortion in celeb shots.

Warning: don't use self-leveling compound on a sloped shower floor

Helped a buddy redo his master bath last month and he insisted on pouring self-leveler to fix the pitch. Three weeks later water was pooling by the drain instead of running to it. Has anyone else seen this mistake cost someone a full redo?

Shoutout to the old school finishers who taught me about timing

I did a driveway last week in Omaha that reminded me of jobs I did back in 2008 with my uncle. Back then we'd wait for the bleed water to burn off naturally no matter what. Now everybody's out there with a blower or a rake trying to speed things up. Has anyone else noticed the finish just doesn't hold up as well when you rush that initial set?
