Carbon offsets felt like a scam until I checked the numbers
I bought carbon offsets for my flights last year, figured it was just guilt money. Then I looked at the project reports for a reforestation site in Oregon and saw they'd planted 12,000 trees on schedule. Has anyone else dug into where their offset money actually goes?

Yeah that's cool but I heard some of those Oregon trees died in a drought...

That was a bad year for some of the old growth forests out there, no doubt. I read a piece in the local paper about how the drought really hurt the coastal Douglas firs, especially the ones on shallow soil. But the state forestry department actually replanted a lot of those areas with hardier seedlings that can take less water. The fire risk did go up for a couple summers after that, but they've had good rain the last two springs. Still a beautiful part of the country even with the damage.

Wait, were those replanted trees from the state actually surviving the next dry spell, or did a bunch of them die off too?
