My new 'smart' compost bin in Seattle just bricked itself after 3 months and I'm back to a regular bucket.

I was really trying to buy into the whole connected kitchen trend, but when the app stopped syncing and the internal motor died, I had to ask if this is just a fad or if the tech will actually get reliable enough to stick around, has anyone else had a smart home gadget fail this fast?

Yeah it's like everything's got a chip in it now just for the sake of it. My coffee maker has an app and it's just another thing to go wrong.

My buddy in Portland bought one of those smart garden planters last spring. The thing had a little screen and was supposed to water itself based on the weather. It just stopped reading the soil moisture after maybe four months. He said it flooded his basil plant and then the whole unit went dark. I mean, it feels like they're selling us beta test products for full price sometimes.

That's such a bummer about his basil. I had a similar thing happen with a smart feeder for my cat, just totally glitched out after a few months. It really does feel like paying to be their tester, like they rush it out before it's actually ready.
