Had a horse with persistent thrush that wouldn't clear up for months, so I started packing the clefts with a mix of copper sulfate and diaper rash cream.

Yikes, that sounds like a recipe for trouble. Copper sulfate is pretty harsh and diaper cream just seals in moisture. You might be making the whole thing worse.

That zinc oxide cream is basically a moisture barrier, so @the_xena is right about it trapping the copper sulfate against the skin. You'd be creating a harsh chemical paste that can't breathe or wash away easily. It's a sure way to turn a minor irritation into a real chemical burn.

Wait, are people really mixing those? Rowan_barnes is totally right about the chemical burn risk. Just use a simple soap and water wash, that stuff needs to breathe!
